Course Descriptions:French I Course Fee $18.00 Level I incorporates skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are introduced to spoken French and will learn the language patterns and phonetics which are fundamental in using the language. Classroom experiences include music, art, role-playing, foods, and authentic French publications. Technology and extracurricular activities provide opportunities to enhance mastery of the basic skills necessary at the introductory level. Purchase of a workbook is required. This workbook will be used for both French I and French II. Prerequisite is a final grade average of C or better in Language Arts or permission from the instructor.
French II Course Fee $18.00 Level II students will continue to develop and strengthen their skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis will be on increasing proficiency in using the French language through further study of vocabulary and grammar. Classroom experiences are similar to French I with more in-depth exploration of culture, geography, history, and the arts. Purchase of a French/English dictionary is recommended. Students should attend class before purchasing a dictionary. Students who are new to the James A. Garfield district will need to purchase the workbook which is used in both French I and French II. Prerequisite is French I.
French III Course Fee $20.00 Level III continues to incorporate all four skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will exchange and explore information through speaking and writing in French. Authentic French texts will be used to supplement student textbook. The study of current events and further study of real and simulated events, as well as culture, literature, the arts, and history of France will constitute the curriculum. French/English dictionary is required. Students may be asked to purchase inexpensive supplementary books or materials. Purchase of a workbook is required. This workbook will be used for both French III and French IV. Prerequisite is French II.
French IV Course Fee $20.00 (If workbook is needed) Level IV provides the student opportunities to use the skills acquired in previous levels with additional study of more advanced grammar. Higher level discussion and written analysis of various aspects of the Francophile world will be regular classroom activities. The student will read a novel or equivalent major work of French literature and will discuss his or her perspectives on the significance of the author's work to society. Similar study of the contributions of French filmmakers and theatre will add to the student's preparedness for college level French studies. French/English dictionary is required. Students may be asked to purchase inexpensive supplementary books or materials. Students who are new to the James A. Garfield School District and wish to register for French IV will need to purchase the workbook which is used in both French III and French IV. Prerequisite is French III.
