update

JAG Nation - A few important updates regarding the extended closure of our schools due to Covid-19:

First some fun news to share.  Starting April 6 we will be conducting a district-wide virtual spirit week! There will be a different theme each day and daily prizes will be given to winners selected from each building.  Our spirit week is being held to show that the G-Men Spirit is still alive and well in our community! Details will be posted tomorrow. I hope to see each of you participate and share pictures!

Alternative Learning Plan 2.0

Thank you to everyone who filled out our survey and provided us feedback on phase 1 of our Alternative Learning Plans.  We had nearly 600 responses and our teachers are using this feedback to construct activities for our next phase of the learning plan. These activities will be posted on the website by the end of the day on Tuesday, April 7. Any paper/pencil packets will be available for pickup on Wednesday, April 8.  Elementary packets will be located at the main entrance of the elementary and packets for grades 7-12 will be located at the main entrance of the high school. There will also be a drop off bin for completed packets at each entrance.

Based on feedback from the survey you will see that the activities in this version will continue to contain choice, increase feedback and an increase in some face-to-face opportunities.

I do want to clarify a few expectations regarding the activities:

First, clocks are meant to equate to effort required, not hours to complete. Completing an equivalent of one clock per day is a minimum.  We encourage all students and families to go beyond that by exploring more activities.

Second, students are expected to engage in some learning activity everyday. For example, if an activity is rated at 3 clocks that does not mean completing that activity allows a student to not complete other activities for two days.

Finally, starting April 6 the clocks will be reset.  Between April 6 and April 17 students are expected to complete a minimum of seven clock activities, one for each day of school that was scheduled during this time.  Again, this is a minimum level, and engaging in more activities is certainly encouraged.

Student Meal Distribution

During our extended closure we will continue to distribute both lunch and breakfast to ALL of our students.  These meals are available to any student, in any grade, free of charge each Monday from 10am-noon and 5pm-7pm at the elementary school.

To receive your meals, simply pull up in front of the elementary school and a member of our distribution team will bring your meals to your car.

With the help of the Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard we are also able to provide a “Family Pack” of groceries to anyone in need.

Finally, if you are unable to make it to the school, we will deliver the meals to your home. Simply call 330.527.4336 to arrange for delivery.

On behalf of our entire staff I would like to thank you for your continued support, understanding and flexibility during this uncertain time.  Regardless of how long this may last, we are committed to supporting our students and families.

As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me directly.
