Operation Teach

James A. Garfield Schools is proud to share an outstanding opportunity through the University of Akron’s Operation Teach Program, a fully funded initiative designed to help current and former military members — and their families — transition into meaningful careers as licensed K–12 educators.

Supported by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce as part of the Governor’s Ohio Military Veteran Educators Fellowship Pilot Program, Operation Teach recognizes the leadership, dedication, and commitment to service that military families bring to our communities. The program provides a streamlined pathway to earn an alternative teaching license and prepares participants to make a lasting impact in classrooms across Ohio.

Licensure areas include high-demand fields such as English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Computer Science, Physical Education, Visual Arts, Music, Social Studies, World Languages, Business Education, Health, TESOL, and Intervention Specialist (P–12), among others.

We know that strong schools are built on strong relationships, leadership, and service to others. Individuals with military experience bring valuable skills that can positively influence students and school communities.

Participants must hold or be completing a bachelor’s degree by December 2025 to qualify. If you do not yet hold a degree, advisors at The University of Akron can assist you in identifying a pathway toward licensure.

If you or someone you know has served and is interested in shaping the next generation, this program offers a meaningful way to continue serving others through education.
