Go G-Men!

The Garfield High School eSports program, led by Coach Cutlip, wrapped up a historic spring season competing in Marvel Rivals, a fast-paced 6-on-6 team-based game that tested strategy, communication, and teamwork at the highest level.

This year’s success is rooted in one of our district’s core values—perseverance. Just a year ago, the team competed in Super Smash Bros., a title that didn’t fully match their interests. Still, they stayed committed, built foundational skills, and returned this season more focused than ever—ready to take on a game they were passionate about and prove what Garfield eSports is capable of.

A major boost to the program came through the generous support of Shannan Jursa State Farm, whose funding helped establish a dedicated high school eSports lab. Outfitted with six gaming PCs, 32-inch curved monitors, and wireless keyboards and mice, the space provided students with a true competitive environment—setting the stage for success.

Competing as the Garfield Motherboards in the PlayVS East Coast League, the team faced off against more than 225 schools spanning from Maine to Florida and west to Tennessee. They finished the regular season with an impressive 6–2 record, earning a 36th-place ranking and securing a spot in the 64-team playoff bracket.

In Garfield’s first-ever postseason appearance, the Motherboards rose to the moment—sweeping the No. 29 ranked Pathways Academy Panthers (East Hartford, Connecticut) in a dominant 3–0 victory. Their playoff run continued into the next round, where they battled the No. 4 ranked Uniondale Sinister Six (Uniondale, New York). Despite a hard-fought effort, the team’s season came to a close—but not without leaving a lasting mark on the program’s history.

Adding to the excitement, senior Michael K. earned Garfield’s first-ever eSports scholarship contract to Tiffin University for the 2026–2027 school year—an incredible achievement that highlights the real-world opportunities connected to competitive gaming.

This season represents more than wins and rankings—it reflects our district’s vision: By 2028, 95% of JAG students will participate in a co-curricular, extracurricular, or mentorship opportunity that builds self-awareness, academic achievement, and post-graduate success. The Garfield eSports program is a shining example of that vision in action.

It was a great season to be a G-Man! Go Boards!
